SELECTION OF MANIPULATIVES

Schools are always governed by a budget and teachers must make choices. The selection of manipulatives has become more difficult due to the wide variety of available products, including virtual manipulatives found on the Internet. Additionally, with increasing competition for storage of technology and science materials, there are the constraints of physical space for tangible manipulatives. Therefore, the need to find systems to organize the materials in the classroom so they are easy to use and easy to store becomes more pronounced. So, choose the manipulatives that best meet the following criteria.

Flexibility of Applications

There are several important considerations to consider when incorporating manipulatives in mathematics instruction. First of all, does the manipulative have multiple uses across the mathematics curriculum Consider the many mathematical content areas for your grade level, such as the operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—of both whole numbers and fractions. Additionally there are geometry and measurement as well as place value. Thinking economically, ask, “What types of materials can be used for multiple content areas?” And, if the product is very adaptable, ask, “What particular features does one lose by seeking adaptability?”
